My Life, Chapter One: Babysitting Trials
One of my earlier memories involved babysitting my siblings. We were each about 3 years apart. I have a younger sister and two younger brothers, and I had to watch them often.
One memorable trial involved my sister and a knife. I have never feel comfortable at the sight of blood, and I was even less comfortable with it while I was babysitting. My sister had been cutting a bagel and cut herself with the knife. She’s pretty tough, but I think her first reaction was panic. She came up the stairs from the kitchen, shaking her bleeding hand and flinging blood all over the place! I really don’t remember getting through the situation. I think I was panicking myself, but somehow she and I got a band-aid on her and she was fine.
A second babysitting trial involved the older of my two brothers. He tends to get emotional and we all have an Italian temper. I don’t remember what we fought about, but we got into it that day, and it came to be physical. We started shouting at each other, but he pushed me or I pushed him, and it was quite heated. I must have gotten the upper hand somehow, because he never did it again!!
Babysitting younger siblings tends to be a normal assignment when you are the oldest, but it certainly can get difficult and stressful! I still am not sure my parents knew about these trying incidents…
