Destination Education: My Biography

Published by lisahudson at 10:05 am under Uncategorized Edit This

I was born during the bicentennial in the Pittsburgh area of Pennsylvania. I grew up in a small town, and in my graduating class we all knew each other. However, my dad got transferred the middle of my junior year of high school, which brought me to the Midwest, near Chicago. I still graduated with an honors diploma, and went to a college that specialized in education. My mom was a teacher, and inspired me to be a teacher. Although I started off wanting to teach English, I changed my mind on secondary education and switched to elementary. I thought middle school might be the perfect grade to teach.

I graduated college with honors, and a degree in Elementary Education. I had enough credits to have emphases in both English and Spanish. Out of college I was hired to teach fourth grade, and a year later I got married and moved to the Seattle area. Although I could not find a teaching position right away, I eventually found myself as a requested substitute in a large school district. I subbed for about three years and finally got into a Christian school, working as a high school Spanish and middle school English teacher. A year later they needed to transfer me to a fourth grade elementary position within the same district, due to restructuring. I worked there for two years, feeling like I was doing what God would have me to do, which was the important thing in my life.

I think I would have loved to stay where I was, but God had called my husband and me to come to the Phoenix area to start a church, and in getting out of elementary education I realized that I have such a strong passion for kids and education that I was putting so much of myself into that and my family was losing valuable time with me. I ended up working for University of Phoenix, and determined to finish my education and possibly seek a career there. The future is yet undetermined, but the plan is to get my masters and go back into education, hopefully with a position that I can balance between work and family.
